Windows Recovery Environment (WinRE) is used primarily to help save or salvage your Windows operating system. It is available on the Windows Vista, Windows 7, Windows Server 2008 and was a replacement for the Windows XP and 2000 recovery console. Unlike the recovery console, WinRE does not require an administrator password to function so giving you access to a set of tools developed to make you and your operating systems day. It can also be used to fix, repair or salvage Windows XP.

The following features are available in WinRE:

Startup Repair, System Restore, PC Restore, Windows Memory Diagnostic Tool and Command Prompt.

Note - Although WinRE is run from the install DVD of Vista, 7 or server 2008, it can be installed on some OEM computers through the F8 menu on boot.
